At SWISH we advise men who have sex with men to have a routine sexual health check-up at least once a year. SWISH is currently offering online STI testing. If you are a man who has sex with other men and do not have any symptoms and are looking to have a sexual health check-up please click the link below.
STIs will take time to show on a test, so please consider the information below before taking a test. If a test is done too early, it will not be accurate. It is better to wait to take the test if you don’t have symptoms.
- It can take two weeks after sex, for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea to show up on a test
- An HIV test is highly accurate 4 weeks after sex and 100% accurate 8 weeks after sex
- Syphilis can take up to at least 12 weeks to show infection after sex

If you have multiple partners, we suggest you come and have a check-up every three months. This is important because many men don’t have any symptoms when they have a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or HIV, which increases the risk of harming their own health, and passing on the infection to their sexual partners.
STI symptoms can include:
- Discharge coming from your penis or rectum
- Pain when peeing or peeing more often than normal
- Lumps, bumps, sores or wounds on your genitals
- A rash on your body feet and hands
If you have any symptoms like these, please try to see us as soon as possible
As a man who has sex with men, we would encourage you to know:
- How HIV and other STIs are transmitted
- Your HIV status
- The vaccines you are eligable for
- How often and where to get tested for HIV and STIs
- About PEP and when you need to take it
- About PrEP and how to access
- About chem sex, should this be part of your sex life
